WHAT THE DEBT DEAL MEANS TO YOU.
Investors: It sure seems a plus for global stock markets, as Asian stock markets and U.S stock futures rose after the deal was announced. It is difficult to see why .Though the U.S stock market isn’t a barometer on the U.S economy anymore. The typical member of the S&P500 already gets about half of its revenues (and almost all its growth) from overseas. It’s a truism that equity market hate uncertainty. And the quick positive reaction is the latest example of the risk-on/risk-off trade. When bad things happen or investors think bad things are going to happen, they sell stocks. When anxiety fades, they buy stocks. That’s what is happening now.
Bond market: It does and the action of the U.S bond markets has been odd in recent weeks. As the U.S move toward a debt crisis, people and institutions around the world continued to buy U.S government bonds, pushing interest rates down further. In fact, last Friday, the 10-year bond closed at 2.8 per cent. Investors never really believe that the U.S will not pay it’s debt. They did believe that large budget cuts would slow growth in an economy whose rate of growth is already slowing . And that tends to put interest rates down. So bonds may fall as investors embrace risk again. But over the long term, this deal in and of itself, is likely to act as downward pressure on rates.
Slower growth and negative factor for stocks
While the deal takes uncertainty over debt payments off the table, it does contribute to other type of uncertainty for stocks in general and certain classes of stocks. For example, the deals calls for real cuts in defense spending (with the prospects of much more), which would be negative for large defense contracting/aerospace complex. And as a general rule, actions that reduce domestic demand (as across the board budget cut would) are a negative for companies that derive a disproportionate share of their revenues from the U.S.
HEPATITIS;, TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
I have yellow fever doctor, said a patient. How do you know you have yellow fever? The doctor asked. The patient reply “Doc, I have fever and my eyes are yellow.”
Here in lies the sea of confusion between Yellow fever, Jaundice and Hepatitis. There seems to be a great deal of confusion about the trio of Yellow fever, Jaundice and Hepatitis. To many people , it would seem that fever along with yellow discoloration of the eyes and mucous membranes and skin (technically called Jaundice) must be yellow fever.
However in the science of medicine, there is a great gulf between these diseases. The yellow fever virus causes yellow fever. A wide range of viruses or toxins on the other hand may cause hepatitis. Both diseases cause inflammation of the liver. An inflamed liver is unable efficiently the breakdown of red blood cells. This results in the accumulation of bilirubin in the blood and connective tissues leading to what is called jaundice. The subject of yellow fever is beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that it is a very deadly ailment with high mortality but totally preventable by an affordable yet very effective yellow fever vaccine which is taken once every ten years.
The specific viruses that cause viral hepatitis include Hepatitis A virus (HAV); Hepatitis B virus(HVB); Hepatitis D virus (HDV) delta agent; Hepatitis E virus (HEV) transmitted in epidemic form in Asia, North Africa and Mexico. There are other viruses that have been implicated in causing hepatitis such as Hepatitis G virus (HGV) SEN-V virus, TT virus (TTV) and other virus.
HEPATITIS A
The HAV causes the sporadic or epidemic causes of hepatitis. The virus is transmitted or spread through contaminated food and water sources which may therefore lead to outbreaks in large population groups. Its spread is therefore favored by overcrowding, poor sanitation and personal hygiene. The incubation period is usually a few days, 30 days on the average. The illness is usually self-limiting with complete recovery within two weeks. Long lasting infection does not occur. Infections may be severe in adults but may occur in children without any symptoms or indeed ill health. Death from hepatitis A is very rare.
HEPATITIS B
Hepatitis B is usually spread through the inoculation of infected blood or blood products or by sexual intercourse. The virus (HBV) may be found in blood, saliva, semen and vagina fluids in infected persons. A mother who is infected is able to transmit the HBV to the child at the time of delivery. The risk of chronic infection in such cases is very high. HBV tends to occur very commonly in homosexual or gay men and intravenous drug users (IVDUs). Certain groups of people are at higher risk of contracting the infection; doctors, nurses, dentists, blood bank staff, patients and staff of haemodialysis centers etc. Sadly, it takes less blood to transmit HBV than HIV which causes AIDS.
From the time of infection, it takes 6 weeks to 6 months (average 12-14 weeks) for the infected person to become clinically ill. Hepatitis B may also present as very severe form of hepatitis called fulminant hepatitis in about 1% on infected persons. In this group, death may occur in as many as 60% of them. In yet another group, the illness may persist as chronic hepatitis B. In this group, the infection persist for years and then the patient go on to develop liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
HEPATITIS D (DELTA AGENT)
Hepatitis D is a detective virus that is unable to cause hepatitis on its own except in association with HDV. HDV may therefore co-infect a person with HDV or super infected a person with chronic hepatitis. When it occurs concurrently with acute hepatitis or severe chronic hepatitis leading rapidly to cirrhosis.
HEPATITIS C
May be transmitted by blood transfusion, intravenous drug use, sexual contact and from mother to child. Having multiple sexual partners would therefore increase the risk of infection by hepatitis C virus. Incubation period is around 6-7 weeks.
HEPATITIS E
This is a waterborne hepatitis virus. Outbreaks occur in India, Burma, Afganistan, Algeria and Mexico. The illness is self-limiting with no carrier state. But mortality is usually high in infected in infected pregnant women (up to 10-20%).
HEPATITIS G
This virus has been detected in blood donors, intravenous drug users, haemodialysis patients, haemophiliacs and patients with chronic hepatitis B or C does not appear to cause important liver disease.
CLINICAL PICTURE OF HEPATITIS
The onset of illness may be abrupt or insidious. There is usually a flu-like illness with generalized malaise, fever, muscle aches, joint pains, easy fatigability, sore throat, nasal discharge and loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Frequently there is diarrhea, constipation and aversion to smoking for those that smoke. Then as the fever begins to ebb, jaundice sets in 5-10 days. Chill or chillness may occur. The liver is enlarged and painful to touch. The spleen and lymph node may become enlarged also. Gradually the patient begin to feel better. Appetite returns and jaundice also begins to clear off. Abdominal pain also reduces. The diagnosis as to which type of hepatitis is aided through various laboratory tests.
TREATMENT
The treatment of hepatitis includes bed rest where applicable. Diet should consist of palatable meals as identified by the patient. Fluid replacement and multivitamin supplements are adjuncts to the treatment. The drug Alpha Interferon has been used in patients with acute hepatitis C and found to reduce the risk of progression to chronic hepatitis C.
PREVENTION
In general, the careful handling of needles and the screening of blood before transfusion are useful ways to prevent hepatitis. Hepatitis A may be prevented by vaccination and the use of immunoglobin in close contact of patient with HAV infection. Hepatitis B has a very potent and effective vaccine, which gives a lifelong protection and requires only intermittent booster doses. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may also protect or attenuate the severity of illness, if given within seven days of exposure to the HBV.
PSYCHOLOGICAL DANGERS OF PIMPLES
KNOWLEDGE, KEY TO DEALING WITH PIMPLES
Acne vulgaris, commonly known as pimples, is prevalent among adolescents and some adults. It is mild in some cases and severe in some others. Ache vulgaris is a common human skin disease characterized by scaly red spots, blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and possibly scaring, acne could be mild or moderate. When mild or moderate, your skin turns greasy or spots (whiteheads or blackheads) appear on your face, back and chest. Most spots come with no other identifiable symptoms. Spots that have become inflamed and infected ( papules, pustules, nodules and cysts) could at times be painful.
Generally, the disease is believed to be diet-induced and found only among teenagers. This couldn’t be farther from the truth as a known victim was identified to have started suffering pretty severe acne from age 24; nowithstanding the fact that prior to then, she never had a single pimple on her face. She was also not known to have changed diet in any way before then. Impliedly, that squashed both myths. For most victims, its effects on self esteem are paramount. They vary from absolute depression, lack of any self worth or confidence, being sad always and low self esteem. Others include constant anger and frustration, inability to sleep as well as a victim is always worried over what his or her skin would look like the next day, reclusiveness and lack of interest in social activities, self hate and suicidal inclinations. In fact a recent study in Sweden shows that among others “ Acne is the cause of suicidal thoughts”.
There are numerous solutions to this nightmarish skin infection. There are lots of creams out there for treating acne. The most important thing about having clear skin, or acne-free skin is to find products and skin care regime that works for you and stick to it religiously.

DIABETICS AT HIGHER OF TB
DIABETICS AT HIGHER RISK OF TB INFECTION
People living with diabetes may need to tighten their seat belt as a new study from the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that people with diabetes face a much higher risk of contracting tuberculosis (TB) than non-diabetics.
According to the results of the study published in the May issue of the Bulletin of WHO, the study was done in medically-undeserved communities on both sides of the border of Mexico and United States of America (USA). It found that people with diabetes face three to five times the risk of contracting TB than non-diabetics living in the same settings.
Although the link between diabetes (primarily type 1) and TB has been known since the beginning of the 20th century, it had largely been forgotten by the 1950s as diabetes could be controlled by insulin and drugs to treat TB became available.
The researchers say with the massive increase in diabetes in
TB-epidemic areas, the findings highlight the emerging impact of type 2 diabetes on TB control in regions of the world where both diseases are prevalent. People with diabetes who have had recent contact with a TB patient are prime candidates for preventive treatment.
The researchers also recommend screening TB contacts for diabetes to improve detection and management of both diseases. This study has implications in particular for countries with high prevalence of both diseases such as Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Russia.

DO YOU WANT TO PREVENT CANCER? TAKE COFFEE
“Let thy coffee be thy medicine” is a common slogan these days. With cancer, stroke and heart disease rates climbing, conventional medicine’s so called “cures” aren’t working, regardless of billions spent in research and development. However several new studies suggest coffee prevent breast, prostrate, head and neck cancers.
While too much coffee can cause health problems, such as ulcers, new research suggests generous amount of it are strongly linked to lower cancer rates- between two to five cups daily, or even more, depending on the study and cancer type.
In one analysis, researchers pooled data on regular coffee drinkers and non-drinkers from nine studies collected by the a International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium. People who drank about four or more cups a day had a 39 per cent decreased risk of oral cavity and pharynx cancers combined, the investigators found. Data on decaffeinated coffee was too sparse for detailed analysis, they added, but indicate no increased risk. Tea intake wasn’t associated with head and neck cancer risk.
In another study, Havard University researchers presented data showing that men who drank the most coffee had an up to 60 per cent decreased risk of advanced prostrate cancers.
Results of a third study showed a decrease risk of brain tumors, associated with coffee. This link was found among those who drank five or more cups of coffee or tea a day, according to researchers from Imperial College, London.
And yet a fourth study found that at least two or three cups a day either can reduce the of breast cancer or delay its onset.
This effect is related to oestrogens, female sex hormones. Certain metabolic products of these hormones are known to be carcinogenic and various component of coffee can alter the metabolism so that a woman acquires a better configuration of various oestrogens, investigators said. Caffeine also hampers cancer cell growth.
In the study, researchers studied the coffee-drinking habits of women including nearly 460 breast cancer patients at Lund.
Women who had one of the C variants, and who had drunk at least three cup of coffee a day, developed breast cancer considerably more seldom than women with the A/A variant with the same coffee consumption. Their cancer risk was only two-thirds of that of the other women.
The study by Havard School of Public Health, showed drinking more than six cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of getting prostrate cancer significantly. From 48,000 men and 12 years study, researchers discovered that those in this category had 60 per cent less chance of developing lethal prostrate cancer compared with non-drinkers when they drank six cups of coffee every day.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MILK
Do you know that milk is a near perfect food source loaded with nine essential nutrients needed daily to keep bodies healthy and strong. Milk and dairy products are so important that they are one of the four major food groups. It is recommended that we try to get at least two serves of dairy each day (substitute with a high-calcium soy alternative).
Milk is an essential source of calcium and calcium intake is essential to developing the strongest bones we can when we are growing ( up to our mid-20s) and also to maintaining their strength throughout their lifetime. Calcium is stored in bones, so if we don’t get enough calcium, these stores are used for other essential functions, and our bones can be weakened.
A 250ml glass of whole milk provides around 290mg of calcium; reduced-fat and super-trim milks around 350-375mg; and calcium-fortified milks range from 400-500mg. Check the label of your favorite milk to see how much calcium it has.
Children 1-3 years need 500mg of milk each day. Girls and boys 9-13 years need 1,000-1300mg daily same as women 19-50 and men 19-70 years.
Milk contains protein, riboflavin and vitamin B12. But the most important thing about milk is that it is very high in calcium compared to other foods, so milk is the easiest way to get the calcium your body needs.
There are also range of milks with added vitamins and minerals aimed at people at different life stages.
Flavored milks can be a useful way of getting kids to drink milk, but be aware they do have added sugar and therefore extra energy.
Milk is a good source of nutrients and energy for toddlers, but they shouldn’t have too much or they won’t have capacity in their small stomachs for other foods they need to balance their diet. Think of milk as a food rather than ‘just a drink’.
Unlike other high-energy drinks, it provides a range of vitamins and minerals and it’s filling. People who drink sweetened carbonated drinks often add extra kilojoules to their diet without realizing it because these drinks don’t make them feel full. The moral is this: If you are hungry drink milk, if you are thirsty, drink water.

DIABETIC DIET FOR LONG LIFESPAN
A research carried out recently in france stated that the number of adults
diabetes has double in the last 30 years. 70% of the rise in diabetes in adults has been attributed to long lifespan and increase in economic conditions in the last 30 years. So how do we prevent the rise in diabetes. How do individuals infected with the disease control it, live a normal life and increase their life span if possible. The simple answer is eating the right diet.
Eating right is a key step in preventing and controlling the disease. Fortunately, you can still enjoy favourite food and take pleasure from your meals even when you are managing the disease. Your nutritional needs are still the same as everyone else, no special food or complicated diets. The key to a diabetic diet is moderation, eating a variety of nutritious food at regular intervals and sticking to regular meal times.
The nutritious food needed by diabetes patient
include
VEGETABLES:
Vegetables that have high fibre content is preferable. These include leafy vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, spinach, cucumber, onion, carrots, avocados, green beans and tomatoes. They are rich in vitamins and minerals and help to maintain balance diet.
FRIUTS
Fruits that are helpful for diabetics include oranges, mangoes, apples, bananas etc. These are also good source of vitamins and minerals.
MILK
Milk is an essential source of energy for diabetes. However the milk must be low fat milk and yoghurt products.
MEAT
Lean meat such as pork, veal and free range pork meat can be eaten by diabetes.
CARBONHYDRATES:
High fat carbohydrates or refined carbohydrates such as white rice, white potato, white bread, processed cereals and instant oat meals. should be avoided Instead eat brown rice, millet, sweet potatoes and whole grain bread. These are good for your health.
FOOD TO AVOID
Avoid food with high salt content and alcohol. These food interfere with the normal functioning of the heart and liver. Also avoid taking soda and juice drink mixed with preservatives.
Essentially, a diabetic diet should contain food from all classes of food with vegetables making a large part of the diet. Eating carbohydrate along with little fat or protein helps reduce blood sugar level, make you live a normal lifestyle and increase your lifespan.
WHY YOU SHOULD ENJOY A BOTTLE OF SOFT DRINK?
SCIENTIST SEEKS SOFT LANDING FOR SOFT DRINKS
Are beverages part of sensible and balanced daily diet? Nowadays young people (and quite a few older ones as well) can be observed constantly guzzling on one carbonated soft drinks or the other. Popular as they are, there have been series of health concerns about these beverages, notably soft drinks.
Are beverages such as soft drinks indeed bad for health? What’s safe and what isn’t? People are aware of the need to drink enough fluids to maintain proper body metabolism, but the question is whether anybody should be drinking beverages?
Ordinarily, carbonated beverages tend to be viewed with suspicion by health buffs because they contain significant amounts of carbon dioxide which may have pronounced negative impact on the body’s calcium balance.
Some experts even tend to argue that these drinks tend to raise acidity level in the system, which in turn erodes calcium at unhealthy rates. This can cause rotten teeth, weak bones and even accelerated onset of osteoporosis if such beverages are consumed regularly, we are told.
Another contentious aspect of carbonated beverages is their heavy sugar content. In addition to adding empty calories with close to zero nutritive value, the accumulation of sugar resulting from consumption of carbonated drinks are attributed to a host of unhealthy consequences such as elevated cholesterol and blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes.
However, other experts who believes in health benefits and advantages of non alcoholic beverages, particularly soft drinks disagree. Beverages are changing the way people are obtaining nutrients are from the diet. Almost half the nutrients obtainable from our daily diet is from drinks alone. A sizable percentage of total energy intake also comes from beverages.
Beverages are high in sugar and ultimately calories that produce plenty of energy, they equally contain plenty of water and ultimately help hydrate the body.
Soft drinks help people to lose weight. Soft drinks are usually sweetened by high-fructose corn syrup or sucrose, which is high in kilojoules. Regardless the source of ingested carbohydrate, body cells use only glucose for energy. The human body can not distinguish between sugar from natural sources and sugar added to drinks.
Soft drinks, regardless of the indicated draw backs can actually be part of an active, healthy lifestyle that includes a sensible and balanced diet and regular physical activity. There are no good or bad foods- just good or bad diets. It’s all about calories in and calories out, and all calories count including those from beverages. Moderation, balance and variety is a key to healthy living.
Beverages are important for hydration and all ingredients in beverages are safe. The bottomline is commitment to helping to arrest and reverse the growth of obesity around the world.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT
Really every one wants to have a drop dead gorgeous figure. The desperation becomes intense, what with red carpets displaying thin women in jaw dropping dresses. Again the desperation wears another look when you get to see outrageous advertisements of slimming centers with various promise of instant weight loss coupled with “Before and After pictures” of women, who were fat and now become slim.
In most of these centers, patrons are fed herbal concoctions that have not been scientifically verified or medically recommended. According to medical experts and nutritionists, sudden crashes of weight can be dangerous. Almost most of the herbs administered at weight loss centers could be harmful to the kidney and liver functions of the patients since they are not recommended for their specific use.
Having weight problems?
Then learn to lose weight gradually and avoid suicidal diet regimen. There are Mediterranean food crops known to speed up weight loss, so lose weight by going low on carbohydrates and switch to fibers found in foods like oatmeal and wheat.
There is fermented corn which is low in carbohydrates and this could serve as a filling breakfast when eaten with beans or bean cakes.
You can drink plenty of water and eat plenty of vegetables. Create a diet routine and keep it for the rest of life. Don’t forget light exercises- jogging and abdominals which you can have 20 minutes, three times every week. This would contribute to your weight loss magic.
Lastly, do not eat carbohydrates anytime after 7.00 pm.
WHY BEANS SHOULD BE A MUST FOR YOU?
WHY YOU MUST EAT BEANS TODAY?
Beans are low in fat. They are loaded with nutrients. Beans have more protein than other vegetables. Beans are full of energy-sustaining complex carbohydrates, folate, and fiber and they even provided good amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.
That’s not all. Beans have the unique ability to provide energy over a sustained period of time by being slowly released into your blood stream. Moreover, they are an excellent source of protein, vitamins, minerals and complex carbohydrates.
This is a good news to vegetarians- beans are very low in fat and virtually sodium free. People who eat a lot of legumes are less likely to have high blood pressure. Did you know that many studies have shown that high potassium and magnesium intakes are vital for healthy blood pressure levels? That the beans’ potassium, magnesium and folate are likely to protect the heart?
In case you don’t know, beans also contain health-boosting resistant starches. These carbohydrates do not break down the way other starches do and in many ways, they act like fiber. In large intestine, they increase the bulk of the stool, speed up transit time and provide food for friendly bacteria.
When cooking your beans, you should soak it and change the water from time to time. This helps to get rid of indigestible complex sugar that create gas in your intestine. It also helps to cook the beans thoroughly, until they can be easily mashed with a fork.
Beans should best be taken as lunch in order to break down the complex carbohydrates that act like fiber. Bread, yam or custard come in handy and don’t forget that the mode of preparation determines the taste.

BEFORE THAT BOOBS JOB
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE THAT YOUR BOOBS JOB
Your breast are you. They are great figure enhancers. Not a few women, who are not so favored in this upper part of the body, would do anything to correct whatever anomaly exists there. Though the process of breast enhancement varies, the demands are high.
Ironically, the word enhancement means different thing to different people. A lady with small breasts would define her search for bigger boobs as breast enlargement. The full-figured with big boobs would describe her search for smaller boobs as breasts reduction. So are those who aim to acquire natural lift for droopy breasts.
But do you know that much like any other surgical procedure, breast enhancement is risky? A deflation could occur either through a leak within the implant or through a rupture of the implant shell. It takes another surgery to remove and possibly replace the breast implant. There is the risk of the capsule (scar tissue) that typically forms around the breast implant to tighten and then squeeze it. This could lead to discomfort, severe pain and movement of breast implant. This also need another surgery for correction.
Considering the great changes that you are making to your breasts, you should expect either an increase or decrease in feeling of the nipple and breast. Change can range from intense sensitivity to no feeling and could be temporary or permanent.
There is natural pain of varying intensity and duration following breast augumentation. However, severe pain can be a result of complications of your surgery such as improper size or placement. If you are feeling severe pain, you should contact your plastic surgeon.
Have you consider the pains?
Like any other surgery, there could be infections, which could be more severe in patients with breast implants than in patients with normal body tissues. This is a problem faced by any type of cosmetics surgery- wrinkling, asymmetry, implant displacement, incorrect size, unanticipated shape, implant palpability, scar deformity, hypertrophic scarring and sloshing are some of the phenomena that can occur, which often leave patients unsatisfied with their final results.

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM INFERTILITY? CHECK YOUR IMMUNITY
ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM INFERTILITY PROBLEMS? CHECK YOUR IMMUNITY.
There has been a lot of discuss about the role the immune system plays in fertility. The immune system generally works to protect the body from foreign cells and bacteria. Sometimes though, problems within the immune system prevent it from working properly. Many couples facing infertility issues may actually have immune system dysfunction, which is preventing them from conceiving. Luckily new test are now available to pinpoint these immune factors in infertility.
Let us begin by looking at the immune system which consists of variety of cells and tissues that help the body to defend you against invading cells and foreign bacteria.
It can recognized the difference between your body’s own cells and those that are not meant to be inside of you. Without your immune system, you couldn’t fight off things like illness, pain or infection. In most people, the immune system works properly all the time. Sometimes however, the system can breakdown, leaving you open to illness, infection or various autoimmune diseases.
You may not realize it, but your immune system also plays a huge role in your fertility. For instance, in order to prepare for ovulation and implantation, your body needs to use certain cells from your immune system. Things like inflammatory cells are needed to help prepare the endometrial lining for implantation. Without a working immune system, normal reproduction can be affected, preventing pregnancy.
Up to 20% of couples with unexplained infertility could actually be suffering from an autoimmune system dysfunction.
Now antisperm antibodies are one immune factor which could be involved in infertility. Antisperm antibodies are cells that fight against normal, healthy sperm. If you have antisperm antibodies, instead of seeing sperms as natural cells, your immune system fights against your sperm and destroy them. This prevents you from producing any viable sperm. Though still to be proven, there is evidence that antibodies against sperm could result in infertility.
So how do antisperm antibodies affect fertility? Antisperm antibodies can really impair the function of a healthy sperm. These antibodies attach to sperm, reducing motility and making it more difficult for sperm to pass through the cervical mucus.
Antisperm antibodies can also force sperm to clump together, making it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg. Normally our bodies develop antibodies to help protect our immune system against illness. However, sometimes our bodies develop antibodies to the wrong thing, which can cause negative repercussions. Among infertile men, about 10% will be diagnosed with having antisperm antibodies, a condition that can significantly decrease your chances of pregnancy.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ANAL FISSURES
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ANAL FISSURE
An anal fissure is a cut or tear occurring in the anus (the opening through which stool passes out of the body) that extends upwards into the anal canal. It affects men and women equally and both the young and the old. It usually causes pain during bowel movements.
Anal fissures occur the specialized tissue that lines the anus and anal canal called anoderm. They are caused by trauma to the anus and anal canal. The cause of the trauma usually is a bowel movement and many patients can remember the exact bowel movement during which their pain began. The fissure may be caused by a hard stool or repeated episodes of diarrhea.
Patients with anal fissures almost experience anal pain that worsens with bowel movements. The pain following a bowel movement may be brief or long lasting; however the pain usually subsides between bowel movements. The pain can be so severe that patients are unwilling to have a bowel movement, resulting in constipation and even fecal impaction. Constipation can result in the passing discomfort when urinating (dysuria), frequent urination or the inability to urinate. Bleeding in small amounts, itching (pruritus ani) and a malodorous discharge may occur due to discharge of pus from the fissure.
Initially, they are treated conservatively by adding bulk to the stool, softening the stool, consuming a high fiber diet, avoiding sharp or poorly digested foods and utilizing sitz baths. Ointments containing anaesthetics, steroids, nitroglycerin and calcium channel blocking drugs are used for treating anal fissures that fail to heal with less conservative management. Injections of botulinum toxin may be effective when ointments are not effective. Surgery by lateral sphincterotomy is the gold standard for curing anal fissures.

HOW TO STOP THE MENACE OF RAT
HOW TO REDUCE THE MANACE OF RATS
Rats constitute a health and environmental hazards to many homes. In fact they have assumed such a notoriety that people ascribe some demonic powers to them. Some Nigerians regard rats as witches sent by their adversaries to undo them. But the truth is that rats have no respect for both the rich and the poor, so long as you have a home. In some slummy neighborhoods, the rats are so hefty that they invade a home, they leave behind a wide range of destructions. Apart from the environmental hazards, the dreaded Lasa fever is said to be caused by rats. Rats also destroy things in the home and even start electrical fires by gnawing through wires.
Rita Templeton writing in doityourself.com noted that rats love to gnaw on wood, so you may discover gnaw marks on baseboards or door frames. They will also chew through food packaging- people and pet food alike. Droppings are a surefire sign that your house is inhabited by rodents; small and dark, they tend to show up in the drawers and cabinets. If you have a keen ear, you may also hear them rustling in food sacks or scurrying back and forth behind walls.
Rats are also attracted to easily accessible garbage cans and compost bins, animal droppings, uneaten birdseed and berries or other fruits that have dropped off their vines or trees. Once they have found a consistent source of food, the rats will make themselves cozy inside the house.
While they are not eating, they are taking up residence (and most likely, breeding) in their favorite areas; attics, basements and crawl spaces, behind cabinets, shower stalls, hot water heaters or furnaces and in the insulation.
There are many ways to get rid of rats. Some of these methods are however harmful and should be used with extreme caution, especially if there are children or animals in the home. The best method is to set a trap as opposed to using poison. Poison also leaves the potential for the rat to die in an inaccessible location- such as behind a cupboard and stink up the place as it decomposes.

ANTIBIOTICS: A WORD OF CAUTION
A WORD OF CAUTION ON THE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS
INTRODUCTION
Antibiotics are medicines that are used to cure infections. The term antibiotics was first used in 1942 by Walksman to describe substances that were produced by small or microscopic organisms, which destroy or prevent the growth of other microorganisms in high dilution. Before their discovery, serious infections by bacteria or other organisms led invariably to death.
Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish physician discovered the first antibiotics-penicillin in 1928. Since that discovery, many other antibiotics have been discovered and their numbers are now very large . With modern technology, many of these medicines are now generated from synthetic processes and not of micro-organism in origin again and are now better known as antimicrobials. For the purpose of this write up, I shall use the term “ antibiotic for anti-microbial. Some antibiotics we are familiar with include: Ampicillin, Ampiclox, Chlorophenicol, Gentamicin, Rocephin, Peflacin, Tetracycline, Septrin, Streptomycin, Erythromycin, Indocid, etc.
We are all familiar with different antibiotics and how useful they are when we suffer from infections. The introduction of antibiotics after the first world war changed the course of medicine and it remains one of the giant strides in medical practice. Diseases that were initially fatal are now conquered by the use of these “magic bullets”.
In the past 50 years, people both in developed and developing world have accepted antibiotics as their right to obtain a prescription at the first sign of trivial infection or treat themselves with a handful of cheap antibiotics.
We cannot conceive a return to the pre-antibiotic days, yet the unbridled use of these agents in man and animals is inexorably propelling us in that direction.
Misuse of Antibiotics:
Data from World Health Organization (WHO) shows that 20% of antibiotics use are in the hospitals while 80% are in the community. Antibiotics prescribing is rising in primary care. Most patients that visit hospitals will not feel that they have been treated unless they have been given antibiotics by their doctors. Some patients, who feel disappointed by their doctors, simply stroll to the nearest pharmacy to pick antibiotics for themselves. The areas of misuse of antibiotics are many. Some examples will suffice.
(a). In upper respiratory tract infection like cough, catarrh and sore throat.
It has been known for many years that antibiotics modify the course of most sore throat only slightly if at all. Nevertheless, antibiotics are often prescribed despite accumulating evidence from clinical trials that they are of no benefit.
The widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in the increasing recognition of the damage it does to the normal respiratory environment. Many works by the doctors have shown that the use of antibiotics for common cough, catarrh and sore throat results in more serious infections of the lower respiratory tract like pneumonia.
Because patients expect antibiotics, they are usually given antibiotics, by the doctors. The pressure is on the doctor to do something for the patients.
(b) In the gut and alimentary system e.g. Diarrhea. In children, most diarrhea are caused by viruses, which do not respond to antibiotics. Even in adults, viral infections cause diarrhea. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics, to treat diarrhea causes more problems for the patient. The antibiotics may actually prolong the diarrhea by causing damage to the cell of the gut.
(c) Skin infections.
Infections on the skin, which are not spreading, do not require antibiotics. The use of antibiotics may cause problems in other parts of the body. Applying certain antibiotics to the skin may sensitize the individual to the antibiotics and thus cause hypersensitivity reaction to the antibiotics when used to treat more serious infections.
(d) Urinary Tract Infection
Patients usually start themselves on antibiotics at the slightest sign of urinary tract infection even without seeing doctors. Some patients take antibiotic capsule before engaging in risky sexual behavior. This double the risk of masking the signs and symptoms of infections and also generate resistant strains of bacteria. This is one reason for the rampant cases of infertility.
(e) Poor Compliance in the Use of Antibiotics
Even though patients demand for and are given antibiotics, by their doctors, it is known that many patients, do not take their medicine as prescribed. Six hourly medicines may be taken twice a day. There are cases of patients who take the entire daily dose at once to avoid the inconvenience of proper dosing.
Patients are also prone to discontinuing their medicine at the slightest sign of improvement in symptoms. Medicines that should be taken for 1 week may be taken for only 2 or 3 days. The effect of this is to generate resistant bacteria, which will not respond to these antibiotics.
Without doubt, antibiotics prescribing and use in human must prudent. The misuse or abuse of antibiotics remains a major threat to public health. Both patients and doctors must reduce their expectation.
The pressures on both patients and doctors are easily understood.: An anxious parent, a sick child, and a doctor faced with diagnostic uncertainty. The solutions are not straightforward. Patients must be educated that most infections do not require antibiotics, that they may actually be harmful to them and their families ( through their effect on beneficial bacteria in the body) and to the society at large (through encouraging resistance).
All this requires considerable effort and time, not easily achieved in a five minutes consultations. We must remember that when we use antibiotics freely, we create resistance i.e the bacteria are no more killed by the antibiotics because they become used to them. Infections become more dangerous.
The WHO is today embarking on worldwide campaign on rational use of antibiotics. As patients, let us not go to the clinic expecting to get an antibiotic for every sickness. As for doctors, they should think and be sure that an antibiotic is actually necessary before they prescribe them. A word is enough for the wise.

BREAST CANCER: RISK FACTORS AND TREATMENT
BREAST CANCER
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the world and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Incidents vary appreciably in different parts of world, being highest in the United States of America where 185,700 new cases were figured in 1996 and 44,560 deaths were recorded. Like most cancers, the cause of breast cancer is not known but environmental factors may play a part. Incidents also increase with age to 50%.
RISK FACTORS
(a) Early menarche and late menopause
(b) Elderly primigravity
(c) Lactation seem to have a protective influence
SIGNS
Early signs of breast cancer include appearance of a small painless lump, change in nipple shape, thick and dimpled skin on the breast. Nipple discharge and retraction, pain and swollen lymph nodes in the armpit are late signs.
Another cancer type begins in the ducts of the breast ( the tubes that carry milk from the glands) and is called DUCTAL CANCER. Another type is INFLAMATORY and involves the skin over the breast and tissues underneath. The third type originate in the glands that produces milk and is called LOBULAR CANCER.
CLASSIFICATION
We classify breast cancer according to how far it has spread. The earliest stage of the disease is the NON-INVASIVE BREAST cancer or CANCER IN SITU. This is still confined to its original site and referred to as DUCTAL CANCER IN SITU (DCIS). The next stage which is the most early diagnosed is the INFILTRATING DUCTAL breast cancer, also known as invasive cancer.
INVASIVE cancer is rated on a scale of four stages based on SIZE and SPREAD. Stage I cancer is less than1mm in diameter and has not spread to nearby lymph nodes. Stage IV cancer has spread to distant organs. In between exist stages II and III.
TREATMENT
The lower the stage at diagnosis, the better the chances of cure. Of women who get treatment for either cancer in situ or stage I, 97% are alive and cancer free in 5 years. When there is spread to surrounding tissues (i.e. stage II), 5 years survival rate is 76%. This drops to 21% once there is metastasis. These figures emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment.
Breast cancer treatment depends on type and stage of cancer. The treatment options that exist range from surgery- lumpectomy or mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
SURGERY: Before now, breast cancer were typically treated with mastectomy, an operation that removed the entire breast. In the late cases, the operation was radical, removing the breast and all the muscles it is lying on and lymph nodes in the armpit.
Today, with early diagnosis, the patient and her doctor may decide between simple mastectomy and lumpectomy- a more conservative procedure that removes the tumor and leaves the breast intact. Lumpectomy is typically combined with radiotherapy.
RADIOTHERAPY: This get rid of any cell that may be in the area of the tumor after surgery. This last for between five and seven weeks. This is not without side effects which may include fatigue, skin irritation, sunburn and nausea and may show up in the third and fourth week of treatment.
CHEMOTHERAPY: This is the use of drugs that kill cancer cells anywhere in the body. It is usually combined with surgery and often used in the treatment of recurrent breast cancer. Side effects occur and include hair loss, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, low blood count, sterility and premature menopause. Medications exist which are used in combating these side effects.
HORMONE THERAPY: Some breast cancers depend on hormones for their growth. Manipulating the levels of these hormones may prevent recurrence of cancer or control its progression. Hormones used are mainly anti-oestrogens like tamoxifen, torenugene, progestin and androgens. This form of therapy is usually more effective in post-menopausal than in pre-menopausal women.

HOW TO LIVE LONGER
HOW TO LIVE LONGER
The role of habits and attitudinal change in the field of disease prevention and health promotion has been acknowledged for centuries and documented (H. Roberts, A. S. Smiths and C. Boyce). At the dawn of the new millennium man is at the threshold of great technological and scientific break-through that portend good in the future except in the field of indulgent habit and lifestyle which may mar the future of man. We need to identify the negative attitudes and lifestyles, discuss their causes and effects and modality for their prevention. In health matters, prevention is always better because it preserves man in its physiological natural state. When illness or disease occurs, we have an aberrant state in which the body can only be repaired or rehabilitated. It is no longer the natural state, hence the necessity for prevention.
In the prevention role, both Education and Information focused on health are crucial because they affect behavior and consequently health status. Health education is the cornerstone of any health prevention policy. It is cost-effective because it predicates results and outcome on reduction of health risks and hazards rather than on injury and deaths.
Outcome of studies on prevention tend to be poorly conceived because they concentrate on indices of the quantum of the health message. A better yardstick is the quantum of health gain like:
(1) Decrease in absenteeism and sickness absence.
(2) Decrease in the number of industrial accidents.
(3) Decrease in episodes of illness consultation and hospital admission.
In a world in which health care possibilities and cost invariably exceed available resources for secondary and tertiary/curative medicine, it is necessary to evolve a coherent framework for establishing priorities that will ensure the greatest good for the largest number. This is the preventive medicine and promotive health as enunciated by the tenets of public health and occupational health practices. In this pursuit, evidence about cost as well as effectiveness must be adduced. To do this, health gains need first to be measured and costed. To ensure health in the 21st century, the following must be put in place:
(I) Environmental sanitation
(II)Balance nutrition
(III)Noise abetment programs
(IV) Exercise promotion
(V) Stopping smoking
(VI) Alcohol ingestion in moderation especially red wine.
(VII) Potable water production, storage and use
(VIII) Increased education to combat ignorance and disease.
(IX) Poverty alleviation and redress of inequality.
I will attempt to do justice to the subject matter starting with nutrition and health.
NUTRITION
A strong body of medical evidence exists to illustrate that nutritional improvements were unequivocally the prime moving and critical factor in accelerating the great Victorian and Edwardian mortality decline in the United Kingdom (Thomas Mckeown).
Similar evidence, historical and contemporary, for other centuries and countries apply. Mckeown positive explanation thesis was “ that analysis of the epidemiological evidence showed that the major responsible factors for mortality decline was a rising standard of living of which the most significant factor was improved diet; follow by improved sanitation”. Hypothesis: “ An increase in the level and quality of the exposed population average nutritional intake, i.e. better and more abundant food, improved the individual and community’s own natural defenses”.
Nutrition-Overeating: Overweight
In as much as our body weight problem has a lot to do with overeating habits and little to do with genes, it may be said to be attitudinal. To loose weight and stay trim, you need a change of attitude. Eat in moderation, mostly fruits and vegetables, little or no fatty meat and carbohydrate will take care of most weight problems. The best advice to attain an ideal weight for height and age is “ stop eating when you are not hungry”. A strict vegetarian diet is not the answer. It lacks calcium, vitamin D and B12 and animal protein. All these play important role in keeping the teeth, gums and bones healthy. If a vegetarian diet is advised, supplement of minerals and vitamins are mandatory.
Weight control measures
A good weight reduction program is long term and would consider:
(I) What kind of shape you are in?
(II) What is your weight?
(III) What are you eating?
(IV) What is making you fat (overeating, lack of exercise)?
To establish this, we adopt the following indices:
OBESITY
Obesity is gross overweight for an individual height and age. Experts believe obesity and associated problems will be the biggest health problems of the 21st century. Global trend and research findings from advanced countries indicate as follows:
HOW TO SLIM WITHOUT FASTING
(i) Eat less
(ii) Eat more often but light
(iii) Eat balanced diets
(iv) Play trick on your stomach
(v) Avoid crash diet program
(vi) Train and discipline yourself
(vii) Exercise regularly to reinforce dieting
(viii) Eat vitamins and minerals to avoid tiredness and stress etc
(ix) Sleep well and relax while dieting
(x) Dinner should be at least 3 hours before bedtime.
EXERCISE
In changing attitudes to healthy ones, there is synergy between nutrition and exercise. Diet change alone cannot lead to sustained weight loss because much more important than the amount of kilogram we carry around, is the share of the body fat.
Fat tissue stores calories, muscle burn them. A sensitive diet coupled with exercise ensures that the body fat amount is reduced while simultaneously building muscle. When you become active, your body suddenly stop storing fat and begins to burn fat. You began to loose weight. This is why dieting without exercise is destined to fail. Exercise needs to be regular, sustained but graduated according to age. Among adults between 30-40 years, jogging, cycling and squash are encouraged. Above 45, cut off squash. Above 50 years, indulge in only walking, golf and swimming. Please don’t jog or play squash except under strict medical supervision. Above 60 and in retirement, walking, golf and swimming are preferred.
An appropriate exercise regimen not less than three times weekly for 30 minutes or more reduced cholesterol, burns fat and increases muscle mass.
SMOKING
In no other disease condition is there an overwhelming, compelling and unequivocal causative relationships than that between smoking, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. So much was the proven evidence that a marriage was contrived between epidemiology and law in order to bring the tobacco manufacturers in the USA to account in an historic one trillion dollars award disbursable over 10 years.
If it is so clear how much damage and death cigarettes can cause, why do people still smoke? The answer is simple, smoking is an addictive habit that can only be broken by positive attitudinal change. Other theories proferred by social psychologist is Freudian; The mouth and lips are erogenous zones. Smoking is perceived to be associated with cool lifestyle, recreation and relaxation and fulfils same function as kissing. Once the habit is started, addiction takes over.
STRESS AND MANAGEMENT
Stress occurs in all professions and at all social levels. It used to be thought a preserve of managers- hence the term Executive Stress, but no longer.
ILO and WHO investigations revealed that: Employed people are more stress prone than the self employed, because the less a person is allowed to make his/her own decisions, the more likely he or she is to feel overburdened.
Stress has positive aspects and can be immensely motivating. It can challenge us to greater efforts. It forces us to confront situation mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. We may not have been good at our profession without a certain amount of stress.
Stress is not our enemy. In truth, most of the time it is our ally. It puts our bodies in the optimum position to react properly to the outside world, and in our private lives. The main problem with stress to you is how we handle and cope with it. To be able to do this, we have to be aware of the following facts on stress:
(i) Stress is becoming more common: 35% of persons suffer from too much pressure at work.
(ii) Stress is getting to the young: 50% of 30 to 45 years old feel overwhelmed at work.
(iii) Stress is becoming more dangerous: In the USA, 60% of all work related accidents are the direct result of overwork
(iv) Stress now affects more women: Currently 40% of women feel overworked either at home or at work. The double role of working mothers increase the burden on women.
(v) Never before have so many people complained about being overwhelmed at homes; at work or about life in general. Hence the global increase in suicide rate.
What is the answer? Certainly not sedatives like valium, mogadon, lexotan etc. These only treat the symptoms, not the cause and later worsen the situation, what is needed is attitudinal change.
THE STRESS MECHANISM
The stress mechanism is the same for EUSTRESS and DISTRESS, since the body does not differentiate between good and bad stress. The autonomous nervous system automatically initiates the reactions.
The catecholamine hormones, noradrenaline and adrenaline are secreted. The work of these two hormones can be felt quickly- the blood pressure rises, the heart beats more intensely and more rapidly, then breathing becomes faster.
Catecholamines do not have a direct feedback system. This means that the adrenal gland and nerve cells continue to secret and distribute more and more hormones, for as long as stress factor lasts. For this reason, continuous stress is so bad to the for the heart.
The most important stress characteristics are:
(1) We are the cause of most stress.
(2) Most things that cause stress are not worth it
(3) Stress is an angel because it motivates and challenge us.
(4) Stress is a devil because it serves as a perfect alibi for our bad habits.
Most people give excuses for smoking, drinking, eating too quickly, too much (too little), not exercising and not having anytime for rest and relaxation because they feel stressed,
MENTAL REPROGRAMMING
Psychoanalysts show that 90% of all situations that cause us severe stress turn out to be trivial and inconsequential later. How can we be patient and relaxed at the moment?
“Never cry over things that cannot cry over you”-Sophia Loren. This is a good food for thought. Stress is the most confused term that is in vogue. It is used as a reference for anything negative or untoward in our life. Hence the common phrase “ I am stressed out.
Anything can cause stress. Argument with your boss, problems with your love life or argument with colleagues. Much of what we call stress is really impatience, haste, worry or anxiety. These are our bodies real enemies. But who really decides whether you will suffer stress or not. You alone do. Most of the time, condition your mental disposition, so that you can cope with or control stress.
This mental attitude is the basis of fighting cold wars and wars of attrition. The same process will be the arena for future global conflict resolution. A major attitudinal change and radical mental reprogramming is necessary. Looking at stress this way makes it relatively easy to deal with, at least initially. Think back on what caused you tension, bothering on agony, in the past few days or weeks. Probably a few trivial things which by now seem silly to have been upset about.
CONTROL OF ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE.
Noise Hazard to Health
Noise now has become the second most serious risk factor to heart. Smoking is the first. The body reacts to unexpected, unpleasant and loud noise with fear and the increased production of cortisol- the stress Exposure to constant noise negatively affect people’s lifestyle. They live with the windows closed, are less liable to concentrate and suffer from headache more frequently. Millions are exposed to noise levels at work that can damage their health. Hearing loss caused by excess exposure to hazardous noise levels constitutes 30% of work related illnesses. These hearing impaired workers receive occupational disability benefits amounting to millions a year. Improved noise protection could spare hundred of thousands of cases of cardiovascular problems. The Berlin audiologist Harmt Berdt maintains that if the current rise of this trend continues, “a third of all youth will need a hearing aid by the time they are 50”.
FUTURE TREND AND OPTIONS
The next decade holds many surprises for man. Where will our food come from in 2030? From the laboratory? From nature? Or combination of both. Believe me this question, will crop up time and again. Not only for the medical practitioners but for the agricultural scientists and meteorologists.
Man assumes that nature is not perfect and because food and vegetables, do not grow all year round, and because new babies are not as intelligent and beautiful as desired, man proceeds to meddle with nature and call it genetic engineering; cloning or whatever. Fruits and vegetables are now totally grown organically out of seasons, or better still are now harvested before they ripen and then synthetically ripened when desire after weeks and months. Man still believes that all the nutrient are intact. Of course, nature is not fooled. Little wonder the great depreciation of nutrients and the resulting malnutrition and emerging disease trends of vitamins and mineral deficiencies. At the close of the 20th century, man has cultivated lifestyle that practically screams for change if he must enjoy quality life and live longer.
What is the overview of man’s lifestyle today and what is in store for the 21st century? Man in Eden lived in nature, only eating natural food before the apple came. Man now has abandoned its root in nature and has embraced the unnatural in the name of civilization. We go out and flood our homes with microwaves, fridges and freezers, television, video, computers etc, in our impatience to change nature.
We delete plants, herbs, fruits and vegetables from our daily diet and replace them with junk and fast foods. We smoke and do not exercise at all. We drink in excess, develop pot bellies, and then complain of incessant headache, high blood pressure and being overweight. But we are eating fewer natural food that provide us with the necessary nutritional value.
Our fruits and vegetable no longer come from our gardens or the farms in our region but from far distance from all over the world, very denatured, so that very little is left of the expected vitamins and minerals. Hence the need for food supplement.
Attitudinal change is important because we do not eat right. We do not drive defensively as if life has duplicate. We work without relaxation and do pollute our environment and meddle with nature.
There is no doubt that change is indicated. But it is not nature but man that must change. The change in attitude must start now to ensure that man survives and enjoys prolonged life
The role of habits and attitudinal change in the field of disease prevention and health promotion has been acknowledged for centuries and documented (H. Roberts, A. S. Smiths and C. Boyce).
The change in attitude must start now to ensure that man survives and enjoys prolonged life
ASTHMA
ASTHMA
Causes, symptoms and herbal cure
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that, like bronchitis and emphysema, causes a tightening of the chest and difficulty in breathing. In the case of asthma, however, these symptoms are not always present. They come in attacks set off by various environmental or emotions “trigger” such as pollen, animal dander, tobacco, smoke and stress. Some people with asthma experience only mild and infrequent attack, for them the condition is an occasional inconvenience. For others, attack can be frequent and serious, requiring emergency medical treatment.
If you have asthma, you should be monitored by a physician regularly, and you must seek immediate medical attention for a serious attack. By identifying your triggers, you can learn to lessen the intensity and frequency of asthma attacks and perhaps even avoid them completely.
Asthma is not a problem with breathing in, but with breathing out. During an attack, muscle spasms and swelling bronchial tissues narrow the lungs’ tiny airways, which then become clogged with excess mucus. So stale air gets trapped in the bottom of the lungs, forcing you to use the top part to grasp for air. Mild and moderate attacks consist of short incidents of breathlessness and wheezing. In severe cases, the lungs airways become so narrow and clogged that breathing is impossible.
An attack may pass quickly or last more than a day. Sometimes symptoms occur suddenly. Sometimes symptoms occur suddenly and with surprising intensity. This “second wave” attack can be more severe and dangerous than the initial attack and may last days or even weeks. Although asthma is seldom fatal, it is quite serious. If you have asthma, you should seek the help of a doctor trying alternative therapies.
CAUSES
Asthma has no single cause, rather, attacks can be brought on by a variety of factors, working or in combination. Allergies are the primary offenders. Between 50 and 90 per cent of people with asthma have allergies. The most common allergies or allergy causing substances are pollen, grass, dust, mold, tobacco and smoke. When inhaled, these substances can trigger the release of tamine and other body chemicals, causing an allergic reaction and asthma attacks. Other allergens include chemical fumes, aspirin or aspirin like compounds, such as phenylbutazone, indomethicin, ibuprofen and nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory drugs (NSAIDS) and sulfites high concentrations of which are found in some food and liquids. Another factor in allergy related asthma is heredity: Scientists have discovered a gene that appears to make people susceptible to the disease.
Lung infection can also induce asthma bronchiolities, a vital respiratory infection that usually affects children aged two and younger is a common cause of childhood asthma. Adults may develop asthma as a result of upper respiratory infection such as bronchitis. Other asthma triggers include exercise, emotional stress and environmental stress such as air pollution.
SYMPTOMS
1. Restlessness
2. Insomnia
3. Increasing relative painless tightness in the chest
4. Mild to moderate shortness of breath
5. When breathing, a wheezing or whistling sound that can range from faint to clearly audible.
6. Coughing, sometimes accompanied by phlegm.
TREATMENT
If you have asthma, you see a doctor regularly, for severe attacks, conventional medical treatment is always necessary. However, a number of alternative treatment can be helpful when used in conjunction with conventional therapy.
HERBAL THERAPIES
Elecampane (Inula helenium), a root that acts as a soothing expectorant, may help the body of excess mucus. To prepare an infusion, shred the root to yield one tea spoonful and add a full cup of cold water, let the infusion stand for 10 hours, then strain and drink it hot three times. An infusion made from mullein (verbascum thapsus) is recommended for soothing the mucuous membranes, especially during night time attacks.
PREVENTION
Learn to identity your triggers; keep a diary detailing all the environmental and emotional factors that affect you everyday over the course of several months, when you have an asthma attack, go back to your diary to see which factor or combination of factors might have contributed to it.
Monitor the shifts in your lung capacity at home using a peak flow meter, a device that your doctor can prescribe for you. Reduction in your ability to exhale, you can take precautions and lessen the severity of an asthma attacks.
Avoid food and drinks that have high concentrations of sulfites such as beer, wine, vinegar, instant tea, grape juice, lemon juice, fresh shrimp, pizza dough, dried fruits (such as apples and apricots), canned vegetables, instant potatoes, corn syrup, fruit topping and molasses. Some nutritionists recommended that you also steer clear of foods that cause excess mucus production such as milk.
A daily dose of B-complex vitamins (50 to 100 mg) and magnesium (400 to 600 mg) may help reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
ASTHMA MYTHS AND FACTS
MYTH: Asthmatics shouldn’t exercise.
FACT: Exercise is as important for people with asthma as it is for anyone else. Equipped with the proper medication, people with asthma can exercise normally.
Note: Many doctors recommend swimming for people with asthma, as humidity ease breathing. But the chlorine in swimming pools may cause an allergic, triggering asthma attacks the ages of two and ten seem to “outgrow” the disease, in many cases it reoccurs when they reach their thirties. It is also possible to develop asthma as an adult even if you did not have it as a child.
MYTH: You will grow out of it.
FACT: This is both true and false. Although about half of the people who had asthma when they were between the ages of two and ten seem to “outgrow” the disease, in many cases it reoccurs when they reach their thirties. It’s also possible to develop asthma as an adult even if you did not have it as a child.
MYTH: Allergic mothers shouldn’t breastfeed.
FACT: Infant who were breast-fed are less likely to become allergic than those who are not.

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR HEALTH ON RETIREMENT
Health on retirement is indeed a very important issue considering the fact that it is the man who is healthy that can utilize his time, money or property (ies) meaningfully. Hence, the wise saying that “health is wealth”. This is so because without good health all our wealth are meaningless. Thus, being healthy is equated to being wealthy. It is important therefore a public servant who has worked many for years and has retired to be in a state of good health in order to enjoy retirement.
From the medical profession and looking at the layman’s angle, health is a state or condition of the mind or body. Good health therefore is a stabilized or balanced physical, mental and social well being while poor health is a situation where one is unable to enjoy complete social, mental or physical balanced health.
In every concept or norm, there are conditions. The concept of good health is not an exception. There are do’s and don’ts as well as adaptations and when these are met or observed, there is good health while violation of these conditions could lead to breakdown in ones health.
Some of these important conditions are:-
GOOD FEEDING: It is clear that food is vital in the sustenance of life and good food as well as good eating habit or proper feeding ensures good health while poor feeding or bad eating habit would bring poor health.
The concept of good feeding is well explained by the advanced learner’s dictionary meaning of the word “NUTRITION” which says “the process of supplying and receiving nourishment and further adds “the science of food values”. Good feeding for good health or healthy living is therefore a process that ensures that different types of food are supplied and received into the body approximately to ensure adequate nourishment that assists growth ,repair and replacement of body tissues as well as adequate elimination of waste materials, which will otherwise poison the body. It is therefore important that we take a balanced diet that contains all the essential food materials or substances in the proper quantity and of required quality. These essential food materials include: carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamin and mineral salts.
Food items that contain these materials are as follows:
Carbohydrate: Yam, rice, garri, millet, maize etc. These should be eaten averagely. Too much of these will cause fatness and storage of sugar that may result in diabetes, a situation where sugar is passed into blood in excess and if inadequately used or burnt up as energy will appear in the blood and urine, causing excessive urination and dizziness as well as poor vision, irritation of the skin, excessive sweating especially at night and excessive appetite for water.
PROTEIN: Meat, fish, eggs, beans, dairy products i.e. Milk, yoghurts, butter and cheese. These are body building foods They help to build up body tissues thereby assisting the growth and maintenance of good health. While they are essential to good health, they should not be eaten in excess. Since excess protein stored up in the body can lead to excessive weight gain as well as give stress the liver which is the organ of storage and kidney which is the organ of filtration that tried to get rid of the excess substances from the body system. Prolongation of this situation leads to conditions posing threat to life. Fatty meat, egg yolk and fried foods should be avoided as these contain fat which cause obesity or excessive weight gain as well as deposit of cholesterol which cause plague or coating in the walls of major blood vessels and the heart thereby leading to hypertension, a condition very well known to jeopardize health and in fact responsible for the death in large number of middle age persons; particularly the high class individuals who live in luxury as well as up to 38% of death among the elderly persons. It is therefore advisable to eat only lean meat such as bush meat, fish, snail and vegetable protein such as beans, grains like wheat and millet.
FAT: Cooking oil such as groundnut oil, butter, lard and fat from meat such as pork cow, corned beef and agricultural reared chicken as well as the yolk of eggs. These should be avoided because they cause the laying down of adipose (fatty) tissues which cause obesity. This gives stress to the heart as well as straining the joints thereby manifesting a condition known as rheumatism which is characterized by pain and swelling of the joints due to accumulation of fluid in the joints. Sufficient exercise at an early stage may reduce the chances of this condition developing as the excess fat cane burnt up during exercise and used as energy thereby reducing the occurrence of obesity or excessive weighty gain in the individual.
VITAMINS: These are essential nutrients in the food which sustain the body tissues in a healthy form. They are present in vegetables and fruits such as vitamin A in carrots and palm oil. Vitamin B in brown beans, unpolished rice and wheat, vitamin C in oranges and grapes. These vitamins are destroyed by heat in prolonged cooking. So vegetables should be eaten just steamed or raw if possible. Insufficient vitamins cause deficiency diseases such as scurvy i.e bleeding gum in lack of vitamin C, beri-beri in lack of vitamin B and poor eyesight in lack of vitamin A.
MINERAL SALT: These include calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium and others. They are essential for the proper functioning of human organs as they ensure healthy and stable co-existence of the various body tissues as well as maintain a good balance of body fluids. For example, when one has too little calcium, the muscles, the muscles cannot co-ordinate movement properly and smoothly, resulting in muscular seizures commonly called cramps while reduced sodium chloride cause by vomiting or diarrhea can lead to loss of tissue fluid balance resulting in more vomiting sensation or fainting.
OTHER FACTORS THAT ENSURE GOOD HEALTH ARE:
Good and safe environment: Everyone should ensure that his or her environment is clean and safe. Do not hoard unuseful furniture, old building materials etc around your building. These form hiding place for snakes, rats, scorpion etc. Trim bushes and clear gutters to avoid mosquitoes. Clear septic tank regularly and keep garden clean always.
Rest/Avoid Stress: Essentially, retirement time is a time for rest. Although the retiree should not be seen to be tired by just lying around lazily and engaged to the point of boredom. It must be ensured that proper rest is given to the body. As much as practicable, you should not hurry out of bed in the mornings by compulsion. All such activities that will force you out of bed in the morning should be adjusted if they cannot be avoided. In short, avoid anything that will cause you any type of stress.
Exercise: Sometime everyday, preferably in the morning hour should be marked out for exercise. This could be indoor gymnast or jogging or doing some gardening work before evening bath and a walk before bed time. Whatever you choose, it should just warm up and lighten the body, helping you to relax better.
Avoidance of self medication: Above all, it is advisable for all persons, especially at retirement age to ensure that you report to your doctor regularly for health check ups and in case of ill health, do not treat yourself.
Avoiding financial stress: It is important to lay emphasis on this since it is a major factor in causing untimely death. A man who has successfully retired should therefore learn to spend wisely, budgeting within his ears so as not to cause stress to himself, his family and the society in general.
Cultivating healthy habits: Every person should cultivate habits that encourage good health living, realizing that whatever you do, the sick man cannot be said to enjoy life. It is therefore not wise to “enjoy life” by engaging habits that defer healthy living. It is even more so for the retired man who should now relax and do all that is humanly possible to prolong his life. Such habits as smoking, drinking, uncontrolled love affairs and incurring unnecessary debt as well as poor feeding.
Smoking is dangerous to health because it damages the lungs and reduces man’s ability to breath freely. The body needs adequate fresh air for your blood to be fresh and flow properly (good circulation). Smoking therefore reduces a man’s life span.
Drinking is critically dangerous to health because alcohol is poisonous to blood and body tissues. It weakens the heart and reduces a man’s life span. The period of retirement therefore is not the time to settle down to bottles of beer, wine or spirit.

SAFETY: PREVENTION OR REACTION
SAFETY: PREVENTION OR REACTION
Oftentimes, we ignore the words of wisdom of our elders to our detriment. Our elders saying in form of parables should be appreciated. Some adages are more direct than others in meaning and understanding. Such include:
A stitch in time saves nine.
Prevention is better than cure.
How true are these adages in our daily lives and activities? Everyday, from dawn to dusk, man is faced with numerous activities that exposes him/ her to desired and undesired events. For man to achieve his quest or dream, there should be little or accident. How possible is this, an active life with little or no accident?
A big question I would say, but it is possible, once we can appreciate the fact that accidents don’t just happen. They are caused, and accidents can be prevented. There is a tremendous need to prevent accidents, and this depends to a large extent on the desire of the people to work safely. Working safely starts with good planning and ends with a safe people, equipment and environment. Good planning calls for preventive measures to forestall the occurrence of accident.
Accident prevention is the protection against injury and safe guarding of life and property, it is the basic concept of safety, which is the control of the 3Ms (Man, Machine, Material) and the system of work. These are the two main concepts of accident prevention:
FLY-FIX-FLY CONCEPT: This concept believes accidents must occur before corrections can be made. “ A fire brigade style” I dare say, which is often the case in some parts of the world especially Africa. This is purely ACCIDENT REACTION and not ACCIDENT PREVENTION, a case of reactive safety management system.
FIRST TIME SAFE CONCEPT: It lays emphasis on identification and evaluation of hazards, and on corrective measures before the hazards lead to accident. This is what accident prevention is all about, to achieve the little or no accident level, a proactive safety management system, must be applied, to our daily activities, on the job, off the job, on the road and everywhere.
Statistical evidence shows a direct relationship between the number of hazards and the number of accidents. Since it is true that accident can be prevented, why should we opt for a reactive safety management system? Where we wait for accident to occur before we react by counting our loss and applying emergency measures.
We have our elders saying, “ Prevention is better than cure”. How we respond to this word of wisdom will determine the type of lives we would have. Remember, life is what we make of it. We should work as a team to ensure the protection of life and property.

GUIDELINES IN SHOPPING FOR A SUIT
A man should own at least five suits. That’s a formal portion of every man’s wardrobe. For obvious reasons, your suit must be of excellent quality. But buying a suit can be intimidating. I guess you will find the following the guidelines in shopping for a suit useful.
(i) Consider the fabric: A 100% wool suit is definitely the way to go since wool is natural, breathes well, it is extremely stylish and excellent for travels.
(2) Take note of the collar: Your suit collar should hug the back of your neck without buckling or pulling on your shirt. Your shirt should stick out an inch from the back of your collar.
(3) Watch out those lapels: Suit lapels are an extension of a suit’s collar. They can have both a high and low notch as long as they are flat on your chest, discreet and don’t buckle. The stitching on the lapel should be as invisible as possible. While letting your arms hang on your sides, your sleeves should end where your hands meet your wrist. You should be able to move your hands freely and comfortably. Your shirt sleeves should be a quarter-inch longer than your suit jacket.
(4) Choose a one or two button jacket. Currently, a two-button jacket is in vogue. One button jackets are better suited for men with slimmer physique. Three button jackets appear outdated.
(5) Vents or slits are the flaps of cloth below the waist at the back. They should cover your entire rear end and should never be separated unless you are bending or sitting down. It should lie flat against your backside when you are standing straight. A larger individual should choose a jacket with two slits, while a thinner man should opt for a jacket with no slits.
(6) You should be able to stick one finger into the waist of your suit pants and feel comfortable on you.
(7) Pleats should be avoided. Flat front trousers are better. Suits trousers should fall to the soles of the soles.
(8) Cuffed pants look better on taller men. Cuff will also help your pants hang properly. If you are somewhat shorter, avoid them together as they will only highlight your shorter stature.
(9) The length from the crotch to the waistband is called the rise. Generally, avoid extremes such as high-rise pants or low-rise trousers.
(10) Too long is just bad as too baggy. You never want your suit to reach down to your knees. It should come to just below your bottom or slightly higher.
Following the above guidelines in shopping for a suit will help you get the kind of suit, you really desire.
DANGERS OF BODY PIERCING
It is a beautiful piercing you have on your mouth, genitals, nose, ear and other parts of the body. Though a wonderful form of self expression, it can be dangerous. If you are bent on piercing your body, then prepare yourself to deal with the possibility of allergic reaction to the products used during and after the procedure to clean your body piercing.
Be aware of the risk of bacteria infection when getting a body piercing. Though the risk of infection is low when your piercing is performed by a trained professional with sterilizing equipment, there is also the possibility of infection during the period after your piercing when you are left to care for it on your own at home.
Infection is a common complication of mouth and nose piercings because of the millions of bacteria that lives in those areas. The tongue piercing can damage teeth over time. The tongue, cheek and lip piercings can also cause gum problems.
Have it in mind that viral infection- HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B is a possible risk of body piercing. You should generally avoid swimming or extended contact with any body of water for at least a month after you get body piercing.
Understand the risk of permanent damage to the nerves in the area of your body that is pierced. Though, it is impossible to identify in advance whether or not nerve damage in advance whether or not nerve damage may result from piercing, it is fairly common that, due to poor piercing procedures and the failure to follow proper after care guidelines, you may go numb in the area that is pierced. This occurs most often in tongues and genital piercings, though it is possible in any type of piercings. People who are prone to keloids should be careful.
